The recently opened Graffit restaurant feels a bit out of place in the Lincoln Center area of the Upper West Side – and this is a compliment. The restaurant’s website defines its name as “an unconventional fusion of art and food”, and that is exactly what you will find. Chef Jesus Núñez was a graffiti artist in his native Spain, and the walls of the dining room feature murals that fuse graffiti and fine art to showstopping effect.  The restaurant’s design is truly breathtaking and transportive. Café Boulud has a most prepossessing interior, recently refreshed by designer Jeffrey Beers.  Seating niches are finished in embroidered leather, wood accents lend warmth to the space, table linens are by Rivolta Carmignani while the custom Limoges porcelain serving pieces are by Bernardaud and Rosenthal.  If your sensibilities are fired by casual chic, this room just might make you weep for joy. That star twinkling above every table is from Michelin.  The latest stars in the kitchen, meanwhile, are Executive Chef Gavin Kaysen and Pastry Chef Noah Carroll.  Before treating the brunch proper, we feel obliged to mention that Saturdays from 7 to 10a.m. and Sundays from 8 to 11, Café Boulud serves one of the city’s most civilized breakfasts. The arrival of 5 and Diamond in 2010 brightened a rather dreary strip of Morningside Heights, and has consistently drawn a grateful local crowd; who would likely patronize the restaurant even if things were not quite up to par – and at brunch, they are certainly not. Fortunately, the food is not the problem.

Bad-boy chef Ryan Skeet opened 5 and Diamond after a series of short-lived gigs (Irving Mill, Resto, Allen & Delancey) and while he is currently still officially on staff as a consultant, Read the rest of this entry »

There is nothing particularly memorable about the Americanized French cuisine served at Jacques Brasserie on the Upper East Side. Still, the food is a notch tastier and more visually appealing than the laissez-faire atmosphere indicates. The former is no doubt due to heaping quantities of butter discharged with wild abandon into every dish.

The $19.95 ‘Champagne Brunch’ includes (or, rather, is advertised as including,) any egg dish, a fruit salad, a basket of baked goods, and a Kir Royale, Bloody Mary, or Mimosa.  During a recent visit, the fruit salad never appeared and we were charged for the assortment of pastries. But considering that many New York City brunches charge $15 for a cocktail alone, it’s a relatively good deal even when incomplete.   Read the rest of this entry »

Elegance and veganism don’t always go hand in hand. But Candle 79 has cornered the market on upscale, biodynamic fine dining – free of animal products. It’s been offering a farm-to-table menu since 2003, before the idea became popular among foodies.

The brunch menu is limited and not particularly cheap, but you can taste the care that has gone into the preparation. A $28 prix fixe includes a choice of entrée and dessert and smoothie, juice or mimosa. Read the rest of this entry »

You should be wary of an Upper West Side brunch spot with a dining room only half full at noon on a Saturday. Indeed, Arte Café’s first impressions are less than impressive – a disorganized front of house; out of date décor; stale muffins tossed carelessly on the table. They advertise $12 unlimited brunch cocktails; but in reality it is $14 – and the Bloody Mary we ordered took 20 minutes and a nudge to our server before it appeared Read the rest of this entry »

Sarabeth’s is known for its charming comfort food and absurdly long waits for weekend brunch. Originally a pastry shop on the Upper West Side, Sarabeth’s has expanded into something of an empire, but the focus still remains on baked goods.

The country kitchen décor tries its best to make you feel at home – but it can be difficult to settle into a comfort zone after being surrounded by the Upper East Side’s most entitled when they’re hungover and suffering from low blood sugar. But that’s not Sarabeth’s fault. The cutesy childhood-fable theme woven into the brunch menu is. Read the rest of this entry »

Across from the Museum of Natural History, Ocean is the perfect brunch spot to bring visiting parents (or even grandparents!). But just because it’s safe for grownups doesn’t mean it’s stuffy.  It just means that you might encounter fewer screaming children than you will elsewhere on the Upper West Side on a Sunday afternoon. And you can make a reservation ahead of time, skirting the interminable brunch lines. Read the rest of this entry »

An antiquity! Well-appointed on Lexington Avenue, this neighborhood canteen looks like a midwest diner rather than an Upper East Side restaurant.

This is not the place for fine food, lounge atmosphere or sexy young waitresses but it’s not a problem.

Barely inside, you’ll hear a cute “Hi sweetie” over the noise of the kitchen in the main room. Like in every American diner, you can choose what you want in any style for less than 10$: eggs, pancakes, waffles, French toast, you name it!  Read the rest of this entry »
