Riverview – $22 – Long island City

Riverview is a not-so-convenient but ultimately rewarding brunch destination. And the name is a little misleading, if not patently untrue: You can in fact see the East River, but there is nothing particularly appealing about the partially obstructed, ground-level view of an unflattering stretch of the waterway and the midtown skyline beyond it. The ‘Land that Time Forgot’ atmosphere evokes a sad hotel bar in Costa Mesa circa 1985; complete with neon backlighting in the bar; stale smooth jazz from the speakers; and a preoccupation with crab cakes, avocado, and asparagus on the menu. Close to Astoria Park, this French-Japanese spot brings a fresh edge to the area, thanks to its modern decor and its sidewalk seating, as well as the tasty menu of inspired dishes. Try the Grits and Eggs ($14) : two fried eggs over cheese grits with mushrooms and aspargus.
If you like seafood, try the lobster omelet ($16). The Frog in the Hole ($14) is also a success : eggs with canadian bacon, gruyere cheese in ciabatta bread.
For the French touch, order the croque monsieur or the croque madame. Every dish includes your choice of a traditional mimosa, cranberry mimosa, bloody mary, sangria or Tokyo sunrise and coffee. Read the rest of this entry »
