All you really need to know about brunch at Nero d’Avola is that unlimited cocktails are included in their $29.99 prix fixe menu. That’s right – for up to two hours, you and your fellow Pastis rejects can drink yourself into a stupor with your choice of Champagne, Bellini, Mimosa, or Bloody Mary. Unfortunately, said prix fixe only offers one course from a rather uninspired selection of entrees. But the dishes are made with care – we recommend the Eggs Benedict, the Salmon Benedict (add $2), or the Portabella Panino, with roasted red peppers, grilled zucchini, and goat cheese. If you need some extra grease to soak up the free-flowing booze, order the Angus Cheeseburger, and add on bacon ($3) and an egg ($1) for maximum hangover-busting effect.
NY Magazine’s review of Nero d’Avola aptly nicknamed it “spillover central” – a respite for stragglers turned away from or too impatient for Pastis and Spice Market. While it’s true that its fringe meatpacking location makes it a bit of a catch-all for aimless tourists, Nero d’Avola has in the last year become something of a destination in its own right – thanks in no small part to budget-friendly prixe fixe menus like their weekend brunch.
For diners who are hungrier than they are thirsty, a slightly more extensive a la carte menu is available. Start with the Pasta Fagiole ($9) and move on to a salad and pasta dish – we recommend the Mista (organic baby greens, shaved fennel gorgonzola, toasted walnut; $8), followed by the light Capellini pasta ($15) served with artichoke pesto and ricotta salata.
If you’re not too tipsy, a post-brunch walk along the nearby Highline Park will help burn off the carbs. Prepare for inconsistent, occasionally brusque service and a whiff of the dreaded Bridge & Tunnel set. After a couple of cocktails, you won’t care.
